The 1993 Amendments on industrial waste which concerned, inter alia, phasing out sea disposal of industrial waste, were, by notification, accepted for Australia 15 February 1994, except in relation to jarosite waste where the option of dumping at sea was retained for a short period after the expiration of the 1 January 1996 deadline but in no circumstances would extend beyond 31 December 1997. The depositary interpreted the Australian declaration as non-acceptance of the Amendments. A second instrument of acceptance was deposited for Australia 24 August 1998, with effect from that date (UKTS 1999 No. 17 (Cm 4297)).
